Local News in Brief : Newport Beach : Council Acts to Curb Material in News Racks
The Newport Beach City Council banned certain sexually explicit material from the city’s news racks Monday and required opaque “blinders” on racks containing material considered harmful to minors.
The definition of “harmful to minors” will be decided on a case-by-case basis, City Atty. Robert Burnham said. The ordinance also forbids the depiction of specified body parts, actions or words whether or not the materials are harmful to minors, he said.
The ordinance will take effect in 30 days.
All holders of news rack permits have been notified of the new restrictions, Burnham said.
