The former student body vice president of Grossmont College, Larry Humpal, was released from jail Wednesday after a judge granted a request to reduce his 180-day jail sentence for grand theft.

Humpal, 27, of El Cajon, was ordered by San Diego Municipal Judge H. Ronald Domnitz to repay the Associated Students of Grossmont College $350 a month beginning Oct. 15.

Humpal and former student body president Michael Bang, 27, pleaded guilty in May to grand theft in connection with a $27,725 spending spree the student leaders had at a posh Beverly Hills hotel in June, 1987.

Humpal, who was sentenced to 180 days in County Jail in June, had his sentence modified Wednesday to the time already served, which was 74 days, plus 37 days credit for good behavior.

His attorney, Ronald Frant, made the motion so Humpal can begin the fall semester at the University of Southern California, where he was already enrolled with an academic scholarship.

Bang was sentenced to one year in jail, but had his sentence modified last Thursday to allow him to stay at a private work-furlough center.

Bang, who also goes by the name of Michael Humbart, vanished later that day when he failed to return to the center.

Domnitz issued a no-bail warrant for his arrest, and his probation was revoked Aug. 19.

On Tuesday, Humpal’s mother, Peggy Klecha, 46, of El Cajon, and David Brooks, 19, will be sentenced for grand theft in the same spending spree. Klecha was the secretary to the Associated Students and Brooks was the executive secretary. They have agreed to pay back their share of the money spent to the college.

Klecha repaid $4,000 to the ASGC, and Brooks’ attorney said Brooks hoped to pay $8,500 back before Tuesday.
