Share

A former field deputy to Los Angeles City Councilman Nate Holden was charged Wednesday with attempted extortion for allegedly soliciting money from the owners of three auto body shops being investigated by Holden’s office.

The Municipal Court arraignment for Coy Lee Sallis, 54, on three felony counts of attempting or threatening to extort and one misdemeanor count of a public official receiving gratuities was postponed until Sept. 14, and he remained free on $3,000 bail.

If convicted, Sallis could be sentenced to up to three years in state prison.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Richard Healey said the alleged extortion occurred while Holden’s office was assisting in a city Department of Building and Safety crackdown on body shops operating in violation of municipal building and safety codes.
