Muslim rebels on Sunday released seven civilians who were abducted a week ago in Basilan province near this southern city, the military reported. Among those released were Myrna Cawley, wife of American physician George Cawley, and their daughter, Catherine.

The seven were among 11 civilians abducted by the rebels in an ambush of three vehicles in Lamitan on Aug. 27. The captives were freed at dawn in Sampinit village and brought to the house of Basilan Gov. Gerry Salapuddin, who negotiated with Muslim rebel leader Rashid Kasim for their release, a military report said.
