Local News in Brief : Santa Ana : School District Shares Health Awareness Prize

A joint health-awareness project by Santa Ana Unified School District and the United Western Medical Centers has won a first-place Golden Bell award from the California School Boards Assn.

The association annually presents the Gold Bell awards for outstanding education programs in grade schools and high schools.

The award honored a program at McFadden Intermediate School in which United Western Medical Centers is assisting. Class lectures and demonstrations cover topics such as reducing the risk of heart disease, physical fitness, nutrition, eating disorders, personal hygiene, self-esteem and relaxation techniques.

Santa Ana Unified also won three second-place awards in the Golden Bell competition this year. The second-place awards went to the Willard Intermediate School Art Players, the MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate School’s study skills class and to Saddleback High School’s Fine Arts Showcase.

The California School Boards Assn. will present the awards at a banquet Dec. 10 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles.
