Japan’s Emperor Hirohito received massive transfusions of blood to control intensified hemorrhaging but was reportedly awake and stable after the treatment. His grandson, Prince Aya, 22, younger son of Crown Prince Akihito, was summoned home from Britain and is due back in Japan today, palace spokesman Kenji Maeda said. The 87-year-old emperor received about four more pints of blood and was fully conscious when Akihito and nine other members of the imperial family visited him, Maeda said. The monarch, who is believed to be suffering from abdominal cancer, has been given about 32 pints of extra blood since collapsing Sept. 19.
