Local News in Brief : Petitions Submitted for Growth Measure
A Pasadena group submitted petitions Monday with more than 10,000 signatures from residents seeking to put on the ballot next year a sweeping measure to control growth.
The city must verify that the petitions contain at least 6,903 valid signatures, representing 10% of the city’s registered voters, to qualify the measure for the March 9 ballot.
The measure, sponsored by Pasadena Residents in Defense of Their Environment, would limit the number of new apartments and condominiums to 250 each year. Retail and commercial development would be limited to an annual total of 250,000 square feet of floor space.
If the initiative qualifies for the ballot, it will be the second slow-growth proposal to surface in the city this year. The first measure was overwhelmingly defeated in June by a vote of 20,411 to 8,971. Proposition G proposed a moratorium on construction of major projects for two years, or until the city completed rewriting its General Plan to include stricter development rules.
