A University of Hawaii-Hilo basketball player from Fountain Valley was killed and five other people, including three teammates, were injured in a one-car crash on the island of Hawaii, police said. Brent Martin, 22, died at Hilo Hospital, police said. Authorities refused to release the names of the five injured, but university sources told the Honolulu Advertiser that another basketball player, junior Jim Farris of Covina, was in guarded condition with a collapsed lung and injured neck. Players Jeff Hales and Kevin Patrick were treated and released, the Advertiser reported. Police said the crash occurred Sunday when the car lost control, struck a guard rail and flipped 25 feet into a gulch.
