The Koll Co. has completed its $110-million, twin 12-story towers in Koll Center Irvine and has started construction on a $20-million Sports Club/Irvine in the 95-acre development adjacent to John Wayne Airport.

All of the current activity in the $1-billion mixed-use commercial development involves the 47-acre northern sector of Koll Center Irvine, along the north side of the San Diego (405) Freeway between MacArthur Boulevard and Von Karman Avenue in Irvine, according to Richard M. Ortwein, president of Koll’s Newport Beach division. Koll’s joint-venture partner in the development is Columbia Savings & Loan Assn.

“Koll Center Irvine is our company’s largest single project and continues to testify to (our) commitment to Orange County’s future,” he said.

The just-completed twin towers face on a major plaza, under construction, that will include a 7,500-square-foot sculpture garden by New York sculptor George Sugarman.

Totaling 600,000 square feet, the twin towers were designed by Langdon Wilson Mumper Architects, Newport Beach--also the master-plan architect for the entire development--and were built by Koll Construction Co.

Major tenants in the twin towers include two divisions of the world’s largest advertising agency, Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide; Lotus Development; Union Pacific Realty Co.; Westinghouse Credit Corp.; Daum/Johnstown American; Auto-Trol Technology Inc., and two law firms: Wesierski & Zukek and Chapman, Fuller, Bollare.

Previous projects completed in the northern sector include the 12-story Taco Bell corporate headquarters building, regional headquarters of Columbia Savings & Loan Assn. and Embassy Suites and Holiday Inn hotels.

Sports Club/Irvine, called an “urban country club” by its owners and operators, the Sports Connection, Los Angeles, will include in its 100,000 square feet full athletic facilities and food and beverage operations. The architect is Langdon Wilson Mumper.

Scheduled for completion next summer, Sports Club/Irvine is the first undertaking between Talla Development Co., originator of the Sports Club concept, and oilman/businessman Marvin Davis of Miller-Klutznick-Davis-Gray Co. Davis purchased a 50% partnership last July.

The Irvine project is an Orange County counterpart of the 100,000-square-foot Sports Club/Los Angeles on Sepulveda Boulevard in West Los Angeles.

Scheduled to be in construction next year are a 16-story office tower adjacent to the Sports Club/Irvine--with which it will share a 1,200-car parking structure--and a third hotel, according to a Koll spokesman. When Koll Center Irvine is completed in about 1992, it will include, on both sides of the San Diego Freeway, about 4 million square feet of office space, four hotels, restaurants, retail facilities and a multi-screen movie theater.
