A homeless kitten and a baby Brontosaurus battled for the affection of young movie-goers over the weekend, and the dinosaur won. Universal’s “The Land Before Time,” took the No. 1 spot, grossing $7.5 million at 1,395 screens. Dinosaurs weren’t the only heavyweights in this film: It also had the advantage of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas listed as executive producers. Don Bluth (“An American Tail”) directed the film. Disney’s “Oliver & Company” ranked fourth, grossing $4 million in a more limited release, 952 screens. Weintraub Entertainment’s first production, the much talked about “Fresh Horses” starring Molly Ringwald, opened with mediocre results, grossing $3 million at 1,272 theaters, an average of $2,416 pr screen. The top 5: 1. “The Land Before Time,” Universal, $7.5 million, 1,395 theaters; 2. “Child’s Play,” MGM/UA, $5.2 million, 1,386 theaters (cumulative total: $14.8 million); 3. “Ernest Saves Christmas,” Disney, $4.8 million, 1,640 theaters (cumulative total: $11.6 million); 4. “Oliver and Company,” Disney, $4 million, 952 theaters; 5. “High Spirits,” Tri-Star, $3.3 million.
