Local News in Brief : Unlicensed Limo Drivers Face Fines
A crackdown was expected to be announced this week by state and local authorities on unlicensed limousine drivers operating in the Los Angeles area.
The state Public Utilities Commission has concluded its investigation into unlicensed drivers based on complaints filed by the Limousine Owners Assn. of California.
“This whole situation will be a bit of a black eye for the limousine industry,” said Glenn Barrons, owner of a Lawndale-based limousine company and the association’s president. “But every member of our association is legitimate. We checked them out.” The association has about 140 members.
Results of the investigation by the PUC, which licenses the drivers, have been turned over to the Los Angeles city attorney’s office for civil action. Several unlicensed operators are expected to face possible fines for violating Business and Professions Code licensing laws.
