Local News in Brief : Clerk at Market Killed in Robbery
Two men held up a Hawthorne convenience store at gunpoint, fatally shooting a clerk when she struggled with them over money kept in a cash drawer, authorities said Monday.
Hui Hwang, 38, was shot and killed Sunday night in the robbery at the Quick Stop Market, 12726 Crenshaw Blvd., where she and her son, Chung Hwang, 18, were working, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Kathryn Nielsen said.
Chung Hwang, who was sprayed in the face with a dog repellent, told investigators one of the robbers shot his mother while she was trying to keep the other away from the cash drawer. She died a short time later at Robert F. Kennedy Medical Center.
The two men fled with an undetermined amount of cash.
