Tropical Storm Keith soaked the Yucatan Peninsula and moved into the Gulf of Mexico on a course expected to veer toward Florida, forecasters said. Packing 65 m.p.h. winds, it still fell short of the 74-m.p.h. mark required to be classified as a hurricane. The storm’s rains soaked an area from Mexico across western Cuba to the Florida Keys but spared the Yucatan resort city of Cancun from major damage, according to local reports. However, in Cuba, civil defense officials reported that heavy rains lashed the province of Pinar del Rio, forcing at least 2,500 residents to be evacuated.
