Palestinian Declaration of Statehood

Having accepted U.N. Resolutions 242 and 338 and renouncing terrorism, the Palestine National Council has met demands by the United States as negotiators for the legitimate rights due the Palestinian people.

It is time for the U.S. to take a balanced view. We should recognize the democratic aspirations of the Palestinians. We should morally question our financing of a military machine that shoots 9- and 14-year-old boys and girls in the head and back (Part I, Nov. 18). Blood and hatred should be the history and not the future if we don’t waffle and waive our responsibility. Why is it that people like Kirkpatrick choose to view the conflict so one-sidedly?

My grandfather’s citrus ranch was seized by the Zionists and he was never able to return to the land where he was born. The Israelis are about to be led by a former “terrorist” of the Irgun, and some factions of that government advocate deportations and transfer of the Arabs from their land. We consciously and subconsciously continue to view the Arabs suspiciously and stereotypically.

The world has moved to remove these views of the Jews. It is time to do the same for the Arabs.
