A Baldwin Park teen-ager was captured in North Hollywood on Thursday night after leading California Highway Patrol officers on a high-speed chase from Santa Barbara down the Ventura Freeway, which was jammed with holiday traffic.

The 16-year-old boy was taken to San Fernando Valley Juvenile Hall after he lost control of the van and it overturned on Laurel Canyon Boulevard near Burbank Boulevard, Officer Dwight McDonald said. His passenger, a 15-year-old Santa Maria girl, was also taken to Juvenile Hall, McDonald said.

McDonald said neither appeared to be seriously hurt.

The chase lasted almost two hours, beginning at 8:20 p.m. Thursday near Santa Barbara when CHP officers tried unsuccessfully to stop the van for speeding. The van headed south, with officers following, calling for additional help from other CHP officers and police departments along the way as the teen-age driver reached speeds up to 95 m.p.h. driving on shoulders, McDonald said.
