About 500,000 women die in childbirth in Third World countries every year, compared to 6,000 in developed nations, the World Health Organization said. At the present rate, about 7 million women are expected to die in childbirth between now and the year 2000. WHO said that most of the deaths could be prevented through family planning, prenatal and other care costing about $2 per capita a year.
