Gulf Air Will Purchase 24 Planes From Airbus
Airbus Industrie announced Thursday that Gulf Air will buy 24 aircraft for use on its Middle Eastern routes in a deal worth at least $960 million.
The deal includes 12 each of Airbus’ A320 and A321 planes, with options to purchase six additional A320s.
The A320 is a single-aisle, twin-engine aircraft seating 150 passengers in a two-class layout. The A321 is a stretched version of the A320, seating 186 passengers.
Gulf Air, which is owned jointly by the Arab states of Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, will begin taking delivery of the A320s in the spring of 1992, and A321s in the second half of 1994.
Airbus and Gulf Air, which is based in Bahrain, did not release a total package price of the deal, but Airbus said the A320’s basic price is $38 million, while the A321 sells for $42 million, making the minimum price for the 24 aircraft $960 million, exclusive of spare parts and training.
The new planes will replace Boeing 737-200 aircraft.
