P.M. BRIEFING : Pediatrics Hospital Nurses Strike

OAKLAND — Nurses walked off the job today at the state’s largest pediatrics hospital, rejecting an 18% pay hike over two years and demanding a 26% raise.
The strike, which began with pickets on the line at 7 a.m, forced hospital officials to search as far away as Los Angeles for beds for children with special medical needs.
A line of ambulances began moving some of the San Francisco Bay area’s most critically ill children from Children’s Hospital Monday night and today in an operation officials don’t expect to end until tonight.
Hospital officials planned to transfer about half of the 139 patients in the 194-bed facility to other hospitals.
