Embezzler Sentenced for Violating Probation

A former fund-raiser for Retinitis Pigmentosa International, who embezzled $50,000 from the charity, was sentenced Tuesday to eight months in prison for violating his probation by committing another crime.

Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Sherman Juster ordered Daniel Jay Sonners, 28, to serve the eight months consecutively with a two-year sentence imposed last month for an unrelated burglary.

In December, Juster had sentenced Sonners to four years probation after he pleaded guilty to grand theft from the charity.

As part of a plea agreement, Sonners was to repay the Woodland Hills organization by Dec. 8, 1989, Deputy Dist. Atty. Michael Pargament said.

Sonners had returned $25,000 of the money, Pargament said, when he was arrested Feb. 7 on suspicion of burglarizing a private postal office in Westwood on Jan. 19 and Jan. 22. He pleaded guilty to one count of burglary of the office.

As a result of Sonners’ incarceration, the charity will not be able to recover the remaining $25,000, Pargament said.
