The California Fish and Game Commission and the Department of Fish and Game have filed suit challenging Nevada County’s ban on steel-jaw traps, contending that it conflicts with state law. The lawsuit is in response to Measure H, the initiative county voters approved banning the traps last November. Animal rights activists who backed the initiative said the traps are inhumane, while ranchers said the traps are necessary to control predators such as coyotes. “Essentially, it was inevitable,” said Peter Arnold of the Nevada County Farm Bureau, which opposed Measure H.
