Apparent Victim of Seizure Dies in Crash
Aman who apparently suffered a seizure while driving died Tuesday when his van crashed into a tree in Thousand Oaks, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department reported.
Reece James Vandergriff, 61, of Westlake Village was pronounced dead at Westlake Medical Center shortly after the 9:40 a.m. crash, Sgt. Herb Roper said.
Vandergriff was driving south on Hampshire Road near Foothill Drive when he became incapacitated, Roper said. His van continued at about 20 m.p.h., traveling down a sidewalk for about 100 feet until it crashed into a tree at Hampshire and Townsgate roads.
Roper said investigators examining Vandergriff’s medical records determined that the man had a history of seizures. He said witnesses told deputies that the man appeared to be unconscious at the wheel.
The type of seizure was unknown and will not be determined until an autopsy is performed later this week, Roper said.
