19% Mazda to Use More Foreign Chips: Japanese car maker Mazda Motor Corp. said it would increase its use of non-Japanese semiconductors sevenfold to $8.9 million a year by 1992 compared with 1988. The company said it plans to use $2.7 million worth of foreign semiconductors in its cars this year. Mazda uses foreign electronic control units in the air bag system of its MX-5 Miata two-seat sports car and in the air-bag control system of its MPV minivan, B-Series pickup truck and 323 models. Nearly 100% of the semiconductors in these systems are foreign-made, Mazda said.
