Glendale 19, Bakersfield 19: David Bowen’s 38-yard field goal with one second to play gave the Vaqueros a tie with Bakersfield in the Western State Conference opener for both schools in Bakersfield.

The field goal was the second 38-yarder of the game for Bowen. Bakersfield is 1-0-1 and Glendale is 0-1-1.

The Vaqueros took a 9-0 lead in the first quarter on Sean Hampton’s five-yard run and Bowen’s first field goal.

Hampton’s touchdown was set up by a fourth-and-14 pass out of punt formation from Joseph Talavera to Dennis Breshears that gained 35 yards. Hampton scored on the next play.

Bakersfield took a 13-9 halftime lead on a 61-yard touchdown pass from Lance Geary to running back Shon Ellerby.

Backup Bakersfield quarterback Bryan Nixon added a 13-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-inches play when he faked a handoff to the right and rolled to the left ahead of a puzzled Vaquero defense.

Bakersfield took a 19-9 lead with 11:23 left in the third quarter on a one-yard run by fullback Gino Valpredo. But Glendale cut the deficit to 19-16 with 9:53 left on a five-yard run by Doug Dragomer.
