Jury Selection Begins in GAF Trial: Jury selection is due to begin today in what will be the third attempt by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan to win a conviction of GAF and its vice chairman, James T. Sherwin, on felony charges of manipulating the price of Union Carbide stock in 1986. Two previous attempts ended in mistrials earlier this year. Sherwin, 55, and GAF are accused of hiring the Los Angeles-based brokerage firm Jefferies & Co. to manipulate the price of Union Carbide stock upward when GAF was attempting to sell off a large block of the stock after an unsuccessful takeover attempt.
