Program OKd to Train Poor to Help Elderly

The Los Angeles City Council has unanimously approved a program to train economically disadvantaged residents and employ them in providing affordable in-home care for frail senior citizens.

“Our goal is to avoid having to institutionalize the thousands of vulnerable seniors who are forced to leave their homes because they can’t get the care necessary to permit them to remain at home,” said Councilman Joel Wachs, who proposed the plan.

Wachs said $300,000 from federal Job Training Partnership Act funds will be used to train low-income residents at Cal State Los Angeles for eight weeks to help the elderly in areas including personal care and household management.
