La Verne : Golf Benefit Exceeds Goal

A fund-raising golf tournament held Monday to benefit a paralyzed La Verne reserve police officer generated more than three times the amount that organizers had expected.
More than $19,000 was raised at the Sierra La Verne Country Club and presented to Chuck Ochoa, 34, who was paralyzed from the chest down after two operations to remove a cancerous tumor from his ribs in April, said La Verne Police Lt. Ron Ingels.
“This tournament went well beyond our expectations,” Ingels said. “It really restored my faith in humanity.”
Ochoa returned to his job at Hughes Aircraft in September and once again teaches part-time at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Reserve Academy.
Money raised in the tournament will go toward a new wheelchair and a motorized device to enable Ochoa to stand up.
