Newbury Park 35, Simi Valley 7--Jeff Buchanan ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third score, keeping the Panthers in the hunt for the Marmonte League title.
Newbury Park (6-1-2, 4-0-1) took the opening kickoff and drove 66 yards in seven plays, culminating the series on Buchanan’s 21-yard halfback option pass to Mark Wilson. The Panthers increased their lead to 14-0 in the second quarter on another gimmick play, offensive tackle Joe Smigiel running 17 yards for a touchdown.
Newbury Park’s Walter Thomas rushed for a game-high 84 yards in 17 carries, including a three-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Quarterback Jai Johnston completed 10 of 16 for 167 yards.
Adam Guzzo scored Simi Valley’s touchdown on a one-yard run 50 seconds before halftime. Simi Valley, which ended a 17-game losing streak last week, fell to 1-8 overall, 1-4 in league play.
Newbury Park will play at Thousand Oaks next week to decide the league title.
