Lawyers for Oliver L. North, in court briefs appealing his felony convictions in the Iran-Contra affair, said he was tried with “stunning disregard” for his constitutional rights. The 70-page statement said U.S. District Court Judge Gerhard A. Gesell failed to ensure that North’s trial relied on no part of his immunized testimony in earlier congressional hearings, which were televised. A 1972 Supreme Court ruling prohibits prosecution based on testimony granted immunity.
