GOLF ROUNDUP : Senior Overcomes High Winds, Leads Australian Open by Four

Peter Senior conquered blustery winds to shoot a three-under-par 69 Saturday and take a four-stroke lead after the third round of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Senior had a 54-hole total of 15-under-par 201, four shots ahead of defending champion Mark Calcavecchia.

Calcavecchia also shot a 69 but missed an 18-inch birdie putt on the 18th hole. Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie was third, six shots back after a round of 70.

Greg Norman, looking for his fourth win in the Australian Open, will go into today’s final round 12 shots behind.

Gene Sauers and Beth Daniel were tied with Jay Don Blake and Tracy Kerdyk after each team reached a 54-hole 17-under-par 199 after the third round of the J.C. Penney tournament in Largo, Fla.

Together for the first time, Sauers and Daniel shot a 32-31 in a modified alternate shot format for a three-day 70-66-63 that put them on top at the Bardmoor Country Club.

Blake and Kerdyk shot an eight-under 32-32-64 and moved into the first-place tie when Blake holed a five-foot birdie putt at the par-five 18th hole.

Patty Sheehan and Duffy Waldorf are a stroke back after a 32-32-64.
