Wetland Plan Approval Appealed by Activists
Antelope Valley community activists appealed to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Friday a county Regional Planning Commission decision to permit development in a wetlands area near Palmdale.
The Planning Commission on Dec. 6 approved a development proposal by landowner Stanley Sevilla to build homes on 63 acres that include part of the Barrel Springs wetlands, which experts describe as an archeologically and biologically significant oasis. Commissioners modified the proposal to reduce development on the two lots containing part of the wetlands, cutting the number of homes from eight to seven.
But James McAvoy of the North L.A. County Coalition for Planned Growth and Responsive Government, who filed the appeal, said the supervisors should protect the wetlands by further curtailing the project. He said the commission based its decision on inadequate and inaccurate information.
