SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS’ BASKETBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP : Register Cashes In for Saddleback in Double Overtime
Sophomore Jason Register hit a jump shot at the buzzer to give Saddleback a 62-60, double-overtime victory over Nogales Tuesday night in the first round of the Southern Section 5-AA playoffs at the Nogales gym in La Puente.
Saddleback (17-11) will play Long Beach Millikan in Friday night’s second round. Nogales finished the season 21-6.
Register’s shot overshadowed a 29-point performance by Nogales’ Matt Schuler, who had tied the score at 50-50 at the end of regulation.
Each team scored eight points in the first overtime, which ended when Saddleback’s Elton Moore rebounded a shot by teammate Marco Gomez and put it in at the buzzer.
In the second overtime, the Roadrunners outscored Nogales, 4-2, on a basket by Gomez with 1:56 remaining and Register’s shot. Caine Wilson scored for Nogales.
Register helped the Roadrunners equal their biggest lead of the game--13 points--with a jumper with 3 minutes one second left in the first half. He finished with 10 points.
Nogales made only six of 35 shots in the first half as the Roadrunners led, 32-21, at halftime. Saddleback made 15 of 29 shots in the first half.
