MISSION VIEJO : Driver Crashes on Ortega Highway
A 70-year-old Riverside man remained in intensive care at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center on Monday after crashing his speeding Porsche 911 into an embankment on a mountainous portion of Ortega Highway, the California Highway Patrol said.
Daniel Maciel Roa was listed in serious condition with a skull fracture, fractured vertebrae, chest and abdominal injuries and several facial fractures that injured his eyes, said hospital spokeswoman Nancy Gasho.
CHP spokesman Ken Daily said the accident occurred Sunday evening about 15 miles east of Interstate 5 in east Orange County, near the Riverside County line, as Roa headed east toward his home on the two-lane, winding road linking San Juan Capistrano with Lake Elsinore.
Daily said Roa lost control of the car while traveling at high speed and hit an embankment near the right-hand lane.
Ortega Highway in many areas has no shoulder and traverses the edge of sheer rock faces in the Santa Ana Mountains.
