6 Deputies, 5 Inmates Hurt in Jail Disturbance
An inmate who complained about the cake he was served at dinner Thursday evening threw his food tray at a jailer and set off a 10-minute disturbance that resulted in injuries to six sheriff’s deputies and five inmates at supper time in the county’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles, authorities said.
“He (the inmate) complained loudly about his cake, and when the deputy came over to calm him down he threw the whole tray in his face and then some of the rest of the prisoners joined in until other deputies arrived and ended the fighting,” Deputy Bill Wehner said.
One deputy suffered a broken nose and another a head cut. The other injuries were generally bumps and bruises, said Wehner.
“The ringleaders have been identified and criminal complaints are being prepared,” Lt. Bernie Kammer said.
