COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : OCC Sets Track Records, but Riverside Dominates

Three Orange Coast College athletes set Orange Empire Conference track and field records and Riverside dominated the team competition at the conference meet Friday at Fullerton.

Riverside won the men’s title with 224 points and Orange Coast was second (180.5). The Riverside women won with 178 points and Saddleback was second (161).

Orange Coast’s Greg Thurston set the conference discus record with a throw of 161 feet 2 inches. Lawrence Hatch, also of Orange Coast, won the triple jump with a record leap of 48-3. Nourredine Morcelli won the 1,500 and the 5,000 meters to lead Riverside.

Joel Cardenas of Rancho Santiago won the pole vault at 14-6, Gary Kerchoff of Saddleback won the shotput (55-2 1/2), Adam Bryant of OCC won the javelin throw (194-1) and Joel Hunt of OCC won the 3,000 steeplechase (9 minutes 46.5 seconds).

Rancho Santiago won the 400 relay (41.29), Artis Williams of Fullerton won the 100 (10.77), Fred Dunn of Fullerton won the 400 (54.27) and Mark Shores of Rancho Santiago won the 200 (21.77).

In the women’s competition, Olive Langi of OCC set a conference record in the shotput with a throw of 39-0, and Fullerton’s 1,600 relay team set a conference record with a time of 3:58.36.

Maricela Benavides of OCC won the 1,500 (4:57.01) and the 3,000 (10:54.10), and Liz Bauer of OCC won the high jump at 5-2.

Debbie Weise of Saddleback won the discus (122-6), Kathy Grayson of Saddleback won the 800 (2:25.28) and Fullerton’s Emily Thiebaud won the 400 hurdles in 1:04.64.

In the South Coast Conference men’s and women’s swimming championships at Golden West:

The Golden West women’s team led second-place El Camino, 505-284, after two days. Kristie Boehm won the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.59), Lisa Hadfield won the 50 butterfly (26.73), Kim Nance took the 50 breaststroke (32.41) and Christi Kasa won the 50 backstroke (29.54) for Golden West.

In the men’s competition, Mark Rinzler won the 400 IM (4:15.72), Brad Smith won the 200 freestyle (1:44.10) and Chris Clarke won the 100 backstroke (52.64) for Golden West, which leads second-place El Camino, 664-371.

In the Orange Empire Conference men’s swimming championships at Saddleback:

Andy Olson won the 400 IM (4:16.06), Paul Barrera won the 100 butterfly (51.69), Tony Harris won the 200 free (1:43.95), Giles Allison won the 100 breaststroke (1:01.01) and Bob Bentley took the 100 backstroke (55.91) for OCC, which has 532 points. Palomar is second with 413.

The Saddleback men’s team set the conference record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:42.70.

The OCC women have 532.5 points to second-place San Diego Mesa’s 327. OCC’s Kim Stanfield set a conference record with 486.65 points in the three-meter diving.

Christine Williams of OCC set a conference record in the 50 backstroke (29.38).

In nonconference baseball:

Saddleback 11, Cal Poly Pomona JV 3--Jason Thompson had two doubles and three RBIs to lead host Saddleback (12-20). Brent Ferguson had three hits, including a double, two stolen bases and three runs and Neil Carter had two hits and one RBI for Saddleback. Corey Giuliano (6-5) allowed three hits and struck out two through six innings.
