Stephen Shadegg; Goldwater Manager in 1964
Stephen Shadegg, 80, Barry Goldwater’s campaign manager in his unsuccessful quest for the presidency in 1964 and a political activist in Arizona since the 1940s. He was named chairman of Arizona’s Republican Party in 1960, eight years after steering Goldwater’s first senatorial campaign to victory. He helped establish the senator’s credentials as a staunch conservative. A one-time Democrat, Shadegg also once managed the campaign of Carl Hayden, an Arizona Democrat who served more than 50 years in the Senate. In Phoenix on April 16 after a long illness, it was learned last week.
