Where to Begin in Older Home Remodel

Share

Q: We bought a large older home and need to begin from scratch remodeling and furnishing. Since our budget won’t allow us to do it all at once, what should we do first?

A: The very first thing you should do is talk to a qualified professional so that you can decide what you want, what you need and how much you can afford. These questions need to be answered before one line is drawn on the plans.

Are you planning to stay for a long time in your new home, or have you purchased it to remodel and sell? If it’s the latter, you should know what portions of your home remodel will earn you the greatest return (kitchens and bathrooms will return you almost all of your investment--swimming pools, the least amount).

Hiring a qualified design team (architect, interior designer, general contractor) will save you more than you will pay for their services. Be open and honest about how much you have to spend, and these professionals will provide you with an overall plan so that you will not only receive the greatest return for each dollar spent, but you will also have a safe and practical step-by-step guide for your project.
