USD Wins Its Opener at North Carolina-Charlotte Soccer Tournament

University of San Diego scored three consecutive goals to defeat Virginia Tech, 3-1, in the first round of the North Carolina-Charlotte Soccer Classic.

Virginia Tech went up, 1-0, before Charles Adair tied it 1:36 into the game by converting a long pass from Toby Taitano. Tom Crane put USD ahead with an unassisted goal seven minutes into the second half, and Alex Streicek headed in USD’s final goal in the 64th minute. USD improved to 8-1-4. Virginia Tech fell to 6-5.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Unranked Point Loma Nazarene College went on the road and defeated the NAIA’s fourth-ranked team, Fresno Pacific, 15-6, 5-15, 15-9, 15-11, behind 17 kills from Jamie Wheat and 46 assists from LeAnne Lopez. PLNC improved to 15-5, 5-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. Fresno Pacific is 14-10 and 4-2.

UC San Diego, ranked No. 1 in Division III, lost to the third-ranked team in Division II, Cal Poly Pomona, 15-7, 15-8, 15-12, at UCSD. Cal Poly improved to 22-5, and UCSD fell to 20-6. UCSD will face LaVerne, No. 6 in Division III, at 7 p.m. today at home.

USD defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 16-14, 15-6, 11-15, 15-9. Angie Rais had 19 kills, Nikki Wallace 16 and Maria Rickard 13. USD improved to 8-10. Cal Poly is 7-13.

GOLF

Three area men’s teams are far off the pace after the first round of the New Mexico Classic being held at the par-72 University Golf Course in Las Cruces.

Stanford and Utah share the lead at 289.

San Diego State is 13 strokes back at 302, good for a 10th-place tie with Wisconsin; U.S. International is in 17th, 23 strokes back at 312, and USD is 28 strokes behind and in 18th with a score of 317.

BASEBALL

The Padres announced that their broadcast team--Jerry Coleman, Rick Monday, Bob Chandler and Ted Leitner--will remain intact for the 1991 season.
