The Supreme Court today refused to reinstate campaign-contribution limits for California’s gubernatorial election and other political contests next month.

The court, without comment or recorded dissent, let stand a federal judge’s ruling that threw out contribution limits imposed by California voters in Proposition 73 two years ago.

The judge’s ruling lets candidates for governor, other statewide posts and some local offices accept, until election day Nov. 6, contributions greater than the limits created in 1988.

Proposition 73 barred anyone from contributing more than $1,000 to a particular candidate in a fiscal year.
