Huntington Beach Rolls, 35-20

Two long touchdown runs and an interception return in the second half led ninth-ranked Huntington Beach over Fountain Valley, 35-20, in Sunset League play here Friday at Sheue Field.

After Brian Williams’ five-yard run with 1:52 left in the third quarter drew Fountain Valley (0-6, 0-2) even, 14-14, James Marietti returned the ensuing kickoff back 62 yards to the Fountain Valley 38. Joe Contreras took the handoff from Huntington Beach quarterback Jack Friend and ran over left tackle on a 38-yard touchdown run with 1:33 remaining in the third quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, Nick Peters found an opening and ran 54 yards down the right sideline to give Huntington Beach (5-1, 1-1) a 28-14 lead with 8:15 to play.

After Fountain Valley returned the kickoff to its own 21, Ryan Bertoni’s pass was intercepted by Don Berger at the Fountain Valley 24 and he raced untouched into the end zone for the Oilers’ final touchdown.

Bertoni, a junior, completed 17 of 28 passes for 176 yards, but was intercepted 3 times. He completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to B.J. Crabtree.

Contreras gained 90 of the Oilers’ 232 rushing yards on 16 carries.
