President Bush took a break from the budget battles today to escort actress Bo Derek on a tour of the White House grounds.

The actress was in town for the Washington International Horse Show, according to the White House press office. “She called and wanted to see the White House,” said spokeswoman Alixe Glen.

Bush had delayed a trip to the West Coast, canceling campaign appearances in Arizona and New Mexico, because of the precarious state of budget negotiations.

The President early this morning averted shutdown of the government by signing a temporary spending measure that will keep operations going until midnight Saturday. There were no scheduled activities on his public agenda for the day.

But it became apparent that an Oval Office meeting was in progress when a group of young male White House aides began to cluster in the hallways.

They were soon joined by a gaggle of reporters and photographers. All pressed against the glass doors looking out on the Rose Garden for a glimpse of the blond actress.

The President was seen escorting her and her husband, John Derek, along the driveway near the Oval Office.
