10-Day Auto Sales Rise: Mid-October sales of North American-made cars and light trucks rose 11.3% over the same period last year, when the sales rate began tumbling, auto makers said. The boost was fueled by an 11.6% rise in car sales by General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp., one of the biggest year-to-year jumps of 1990. Sales of cars made in Japanese auto makers’ U.S. plants rose 42.2%. The Big Three held 84.8% of the domestically produced car market during the period. The 10 major U.S. auto makers said their cars and trucks sold at an average daily rate of 31,328 during the Oct. 11-20 period this year, compared to a daily rate of 28,156 during the same time last year.
