The UC San Diego men’s and women’s soccer teams won their final regular-season matches Sunday afternoon, perhaps solidifying their positions as top-seeded teams in the regional playoffs.

The pairings for the NCAA Division III West Regional playoffs will be announced this morning. Both UCSD teams are expected to be top-seeded.

The men’s team (15-2-1 and ranked fifth in the nation) defeated U.S. International, 2-0, on goals from Mike Gerhardt and Jed Brintzenhoff. Gerhardt’s goal, a header, came in the first half off a pass from Chris Hanssen. Brintzenhoff drilled a 20-yard shot into an open net after a nifty pass from Chris Romey. USIU fell to 5-11-1.

UCSD may play host to a regional match on Wednesday.

The women’s team (14-2-1 and ranked third in the nation) got its 13th shutout of the season, 3-0, over Cal State San Bernardino (9-9).

Jaymie Bradford headed in the first two goals on nearly identical corner kick passes from Kalyn Shea. Fifth-year senior Jennifer Kingsbury, playing for perhaps the last time at UCSD, scored the final goal.

UCSD probably will travel to Minnesota for its regional playoffs beginning Saturday.
