The factory producing the dirty and clumsy Trabant car in what was East Germany was given a last-minute reprieve Friday when the German Economic Ministry said it approved the export of 10,000 of the cars to Poland.

The ministry said the Polish order gives the plant enough work to survive until at least February. It had been scheduled to shut down next month.
