Duarte : Drunk Drivers Would Pay
Drunk drivers would have to pay for processing of their arrests under an ordinance in the planning stages.
The City Council on Tuesday directed city staff members to prepare an ordinance requiring drunk drivers to pay all arrest and booking costs.
If the ordinance passes, volunteers will go over arrest reports of convicted drunk drivers arrested in Duarte by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, with which the city contracts for police services. The volunteers would compute the time deputies spent on each arrest and come up with a bill for the service. Specifics of the collection procedure have yet to be established.
No deadline for drafting the ordinance was set.
A number of other cities in Los Angeles County have similar ordinances, including West Hollywood, Lakewood and Norwalk, a city report said.
