Miller Scores School-Record 44 but Fullerton Falls in Overtime

Senior Genia Miller scored a school-record 44 points for Cal State Fullerton, but the Titans lost, 88-82, in overtime to Nevada Las Vegas in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game Monday night in Las Vegas.

The defeat ended 24th-ranked Fullerton’s six-game winning streak and dropped the Titans (16-5, 9-3 in conference) into second place behind 17th-ranked UNLV (17-4, 8-2).

Miller surpassed her mark of 43 set last season against Hawaii. She was 16 of 25 from the field and 12 of 21 on free-throw attempts.

UNLV had a chance to avoid overtime when Teresa Jackson was fouled while shooting with no time left in regulation. But she missed both free-throw attempts.

Joey Ray made a basket with 3:33 left in overtime and Fullerton led, 79-77, but UNLV came back to score the next five points and never trailed again. Tami Moore hit a three-pointer with 2:58 left to put UNLV ahead, 82-79.

Fullerton trailed much of the game, finally taking its first lead, 71-69, on a basket by Miller with 2:19 left in regulation. UNLV came back to tie it, 71-71, but Ray hit a three-pointer to put Fullerton ahead, 74-71, with 2:19 left. Fullerton led, 76-73, when Miller scored on a lay-in with 58 seconds left.

Tasha Bradley made one of two free throws for UNLV with 40 seconds left to cut the Fullerton lead to 76-74. Michelle Hennessey made one of two free throws with 28 seconds left to give the Titans a 77-74, lead but UNLV tied it, 77-77, on a three-pointer by Vicki Lander with 13 seconds left.

Claudette Jackson scored 16 points for Fullerton and Lander had 20 for UNLV.
