From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The African National Congress accused South African authorities of waging clandestine war against it while publicly seeking a peaceful transition to democracy. The ANC said it had learned of a plan by unidentified agitators to kill ANC leaders in a terror campaign sanctioned by elements of the security forces. It said the object is to ruin the ANC’s peace accord with the rival Inkatha Freedom Party. Government officials denied the allegation and asked for evidence. The ANC rejected a government invitation to May 24-25 multi-party talks aimed at ending bloodshed, denouncing it as a ploy.
