Summer Gas Demand May Be Off Slightly: The demand will drop 1.4% below last summer’s level due to the recession and increased automobile efficiency, the Energy Department said. The department estimated that demand would average 7.39 million barrels a day, down 100,000 a day from last year. Because stocks of gasoline are at unusually low levels, however, the agency said imports will have to increase or U.S. refineries will have to step up production to meet the demand.
