NCAA GOLF ROUNDUP : UCLA’s Erb Drops Into Tie in Women’s Championships

Christy Erb of UCLA, a University of San Diego High alumna, fell into a tie with Annika Sorenstam of Arizona, who shot a 2-under 70, for the lead through three rounds of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships in Columbus, Ohio, Friday.

But Erb, after playing the front side in par 36, had difficulties on the back nine--shooting a 39--to finish with a 75.

Erb, a junior from Bonita, had earlier rounds of 71 and 70. UCLA maintained its two-stroke lead at 896 through 54 holes. Fellow Bruin and Bonitan Elizabeth Bowman, fell from 12 to 19 strokes off the pace with an 82.

Tim Todd of San Diego State shot a par 72 on the 7,300-yard University of New Mexico south course in the second round of the NCAA West Regional golf championships in Albuquerque, N.M., and was tied with Nevada Las Vegas’ Monte Montgomery for fourth. Todd is three under par for the tournament at 141.

Arizona State’s Brett Dean had the top score for the round--a 66--but was disqualified for failure to sign his scorecard. Warren Schutte of UNLV still leads the tournament after shooting 70 for a 136 total.

UC San Diego tied the low team score for the second consecutive day and finished in fourth place at the NCAA Division III Men’s Championships at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb.
