TORONTO —
Eleven Soviet fishermen defected Tuesday to Canada from a fishing ship anchored off the Atlantic coast at Corner Brook, Newfoundland, police said.
A total of 21 Soviet fishermen have now defected since four factory fishing ships came to buy cod and herring from local fishermen three weeks ago, said Staff Sgt. Loran Good of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
The defectors were transferred to the Canadian immigration center at Gander, Newfoundland.
