STANTON : City Plans Bash for Its 35th Birthday

Share

Residents and local political figures are expected to turn out for the city’s 35th birthday celebration Monday.

For the birthday party, city officials have compiled a retrospective video of the city’s history. The video, which will be shown Monday, includes clips on the annual children’s snail races held in the early 1970s and stories about the city’s early days and its bid for incorporation.

Stanton was incorporated on June 4, 1956. At that time, the city had mounted horse police patrols, a volunteer fire department and a single ambulance--a 1954 Cadillac bought for $1,200. Its population was about 1,500; it is about 30,000 today.

The festivities to commemorate the city’s early years will have a ‘50s theme. They will include music, birthday cakes and comments by Mayor Sal Sapien. The event will be at the city Cultural Arts and Recreation Center, 11081 Cedar St., and run from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Local merchants will provide free food and drinks.
